Any account of the history between CCFC and Spurs will probably always focus largely on two key games:
Firstly the 1987 FA Cup final, where we beat them 3-2 at Wembley to claim the only major honour in our history - surely for any football fan, one of the most entertaining Cup Finals of all time.
And secondly, but no less significantly, the final day of the 1996-97 season where we won 2-1 at White Hart Lane to stay in the Premiership, the greatest of our great escapes from relegation.
A couple of years earlier we also won at the Lane in a relegation battle, and a 4-0 win at Highfield Road proved the turning point in our most successful season in a generation, so we have generally been rather grateful to Spurs over the years for letting us beat them.
There have also been times when they've beaten us, of course, and in the year we went down from the Premiership, a heavy defeat at their place late in the season suggested that our luck might finally have run out.
There seems to be a tendency for their fans to be a trifle arrogant and assume their club to be bigger than it really is, based on things that happened decades ago - Spurs relationship with Arsenal is comparable to Everton's with Liverpool in many ways - and talk of 'Spurs fans appreciate good football' as if all other supporters do not, is mildly insulting, although it's less prevalent than in the past.
Since relegation from the Premiership, we've faced Spurs in Cup competition, and it's a fixture that always attracts media attention because of 1987. We've not actually beaten Tottentham now for almost ten years.
