For most people, Stockport are a club that punched above their weight for a few years and had a good Cup run in the 1990s with some memorable games against MIddlesbrough.
For us, their chief significance is that a trip to Edgeley Park was the opening fixture of our 2001-02 campaign, and therefore our first game outside the top flight for 34 seasons!
We won 2-0, and it seemed a better result at the time than it turned out to be. Stockport were relegated that season, and were quickly revealed as one of the weakest teams in that division.
And they still got a draw at Highfield Road that season!
