This Month's Highlights: The Sky Blues stutter over the finishing line in dreadful form, but Westwood and Fox both make the PFA Team of the Season.

27th April 2009:

CITY DUO IN PFA TEAM OF THE SEASON

Two Coventry City players have been named in the PFA Championship team of the season!

Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood and left-back Danny Fox have been voted the best in the division in their respective positions by their peers, the first time that the Sky Blues have had any players win such an accolade.

To further put this into perspective: Champions Wolves had three players in the team, and play-off contenders Cardiff and Swansea had two each, with one player apiece from automatic promotion hopefuls Reading and Sheffield United. So, every other player in the XI came from a team guaranteed to finish in the top eight.

It's an impressive achievement for the individuals, and given that Aron Gunnarsson was probably not too far away in the reckoning either, just makes it even more of a mystery that we have done so poorly overall this season. Are all the other players really that poor?!?

On the downside, the awards will further raise the profile of these two excellent players, and they will undoubtedly attract attention from Premiership clubs in the Summer, but that's football.

If, and it's a big If, we can hold on to guys like Westwood and Fox through the next transfer window, and add another couple of lower-league gems to our squad, we might just be in a position to challenge next season, but it's a tall order.

The thin times are continuing for Coventry supporters, and the fact that we've been technically safe for a couple of games can only paper over the cracks.

Watford came from two goals down to beat us today - something we haven't done in the league for over 20 years. They've now done the double over us, despite being a mediocre team, just as Plymouth did. It's a shambles. Our defence capitulates with alarming frequency, and we don't have anyone capable of scoring enough goals to turn a game around.

Our final game of the season is at Ipswich, where we always lose, and where Roy Keane has just taken over as manager, so we'll almost certainly lose there too, and that'll mean that we finish the season with one point more than we managed last season.

Yep, just one measly stinking point.

So, apparently Coleman is one of the brightest young managers outside the Premiership. And Westwood is one of the best keepers outside the Premiership. And Gunnarsson and Fox ditto ditto blah blah...

And yet, for all this wealth of talent, we are, just one point better than we were last season!

At this rate of improvement, we can look forward to achieving enough points to make the play-offs in about 2030.

HALL OF FAME!

It's a shame we capitulated defensively today, but nonetheless... Congratulations to Marcus Hall on notching up 300 appearances for the club.

It's quite an achievement in this day and age to make so many appearances for one club, particularly a hometown club, and Marcus is a Coventry kid through and through.

In his two spells with us over the last 14 years since he made his debut, he has shown committment and leadership. And indeed versatility. He might be a left-back, but under various managers, he has played in central defence, right-back, and in his younger days as a left-winger and holding midfielder too!

Marcus is likely to continue with us next season, having been offered a contract extension, and will play in a testimonial match at the Ricoh Arena ahead of the start of the new campaign.

It's our final home game of the season, and a chance to restore some end-of-season pride in front of our own fans. For Watford, one place beneath us in the league, a point will mathematically guarantee safety, and a win will complete a second successive league double over us. We will be wearing the remake of the legendary 'chocolate brown' strip for the game, hopefully not an indicator that we're in for a shit performance?

Clinton Morrison should return after illness, and will captain the side in the continued absence of Scott Dann. Young Ashley Cain might be given his first start, following recent substitute appearances, and we still have a whole host of players injured. Marcus Hall is set to make his 300th appearance for the club! Watford will hand a late fitness test to striker Tamas Priskin, but keeper Mart Poom is a long-term absentee.

It would be nice to end the season on a high, but we probably won't, and most of Coleman's impressive signings will probably be gone in the Summer, leaving us in a similar position this time next year. A disappointing end to a disappointing campaign at 'Fortress Ricoh'.

A controversi and dramatic end to the game, and Barnsley supporters might not be very happy, but we've been waiting months for that penalty award, and the point means we've finally surpassed last season's tally - with a mere two games remaining!

It's not very often that we score a last minute decider either, and over the last few years we've suffered this kind of thing against us way more often than we've benefitted from it.

Barnsley have been good to us over the years, and we should be rooting for them to stay up, and for Plymouth to go down, which would be to our long-term benefit.

Barnsley badgeBarnsley

Barnsley should have gone down last season. Instead, they won a couple of flukey away games in the run-in against better sides with nothing to play for, and stayed up. They are currently fourth from bottom, and might very well do exactly the same thing this season if they win at the Ricoh. We are now mathematically safe with three games remaining, and it would be a shame if Barnsley were to go down, because we usually beat them. In a perverse twist, we might do better losing this game, so that the Tykes can stay up, and we can take points off them next season when we need to. On the other hand, we should really be aiming to finish the season strongly and show that we have made a little progress from last time.

With safety now guaranteed, the likes of young Ashley Cain, Adam Walker and Curtis Wynter will surely feature more in the team for the final few games, perhaps alongside some other Academy players. Scott Dann is the latest addition to those who won't play again for us this season. Michael Mifsud will not be able to line up for Barnsley, because he is still technically only there on loan, and forward Iain Hume is a long-term absentee for them.

If we can't win here, then we really are pretty pants, but then Barnsley are scrapping for their lives, just as Forest were on Saturday and Plymouth were the week before. Unfortunately this looks like another disappointing day, though we might finally get a penalty.

SAFE.

Ipswich's 3-2 victory over Norwich in today's East Anglian derby means we are mathematically safe from relegation.

Norwich are third from bottom, seven points behind us, and have only two games left, so we will definitely be playing Championship football next season.

So, relief all round then, and three games earlier than last season, but that cannot excuse the lack of progress we've made.

Another defeat to a struggling side, and another day goes by when we could have secured safety but didn't.

Barnsley and Watford at home, then Ipswich away. If we lose all these games, not only is there a slight possibility we might be relegated, but we'll have made absolutely no progress from last season in numerical terms.

The end of season games are stereotypically meaningless, but the team could effectively be playing for Coleman's job, because if we end up in 21st place again with 53 points, it's hard to see Ray Ranson being happy with that.

Elsewhere, things are starting to take shape, and we much congratulate Wolves who have clinched automatic promotion - almost certainly as Champions.

But while we're losing one local rival, we'll gain another, because Leicester are now confirmed as Champions of League One, but we'll be saying goodbye to Charlton whose long-expected relegation was confirmed today.

Championship Preview

Nottingham Forest badgeNottingham Forest

Coventry City badgeCoventry City

A point from this game could guarantee safety, although we're probably safe already, having matched last season's tally of 53 points, with which no side has ever been relegated. Forest, on the other hand, are fighting for their lives, and historically have an excellent record against us, so this could be like our game at Plymouth last week, if we're not careful. Where once we looked like we might make a late play-off charge, we're now trying to just stumble over the finishing line to the Summer break.

Aron Gunnarsson and Robbie Simpson are available again after missing the Bank Holiday game against Charlton through injury, but Guillame Beuzelin is a doubt. Several players might not be available again this season, with the likes of Best, Bell, McKenzie snd McPake unlikely to feature for us in the final four games. Forest are waiting on the fitness of striker duo Rob Earnshaw and Nathan Tyson, while keeper Iain Turner is a doubt and Kelvin is suspended.

Last time we went to Forest, we won emphatically and they were relegated at the end of that season. It's unlikely to happen this time, as we have been poor lately, and they need it badly.

We're still not completely safe, Charlton still aren't completely relegated, and it's another typical day at the office.

It says a lot about our situation in recent years that drawing at home against the bottom club in the division comes as no surprise.

It's a fact that we've been held at home by a team that has gone down at least once every season in the last decade.

We've reached 53 points, matching last season's total with four games still to play, but we might not get that many more.

How do you recover from a humiliation like our heaviest defeat of the season at Home Park? In an ideal world, we'd bounce back and win our next game, but then the world of football is far from ideal. Beleagured Charlton visit us rock bottom of the table and on the brink of relegation. But they have improved lately and will want to go down fighting. Some fans would like to see us showing no mercy, given the way in which they beat us at the end of last season at The Valley when they had nothing to play for.

Surely Coleman will make significant changes following Saturday's game. Both Westwood and Gunnarsson came off injured, and are doubts here, while Kevin Thornton could start after a respectable apperance as sub. We should also see the return of Elliot Ward in place of mistake-prone Ben Turner. Charlton have defender Jon Fortune, midfielder Jose Semedo and striker Andy Gray all sidelined.

They did their best to try and relegate us at the end of last season, and we could return the favour here. But a draw is probably the more likely outcome. Ward to come back into the side and score from the spot.

Oh dear.

It's one thing not doing well against Plymouth, but conceding four goals to a team struggling at the wrong end of the table is cause for significant concern.

What the hell happened today? The exact same team that should have won at Palace just days earlier capitulated utterly, making mistake after mistake.

There are no excuses for days like this, and with bottom club Charlton visiting the Ricoh in two days time, we'd best get ready for more ritual humiliation this Eastertide.

10th April 2009:

HENDERSON DEPARTS

Loan signing Jordan Henderson has returned to parent club Sunderland, following a diagnoses that he will miss he remainder of the season with a metatarsal injury sustained in our game against Reading last weekend.

Henderson had been an impressive figure on the right side of midfield during his spell with us, and is a player we could well try to sign permanently in the Summer, especially if Sunderland are relegated from the Premiership.

Stephen Wright could also miss the run-in, while Leon McKenzie might not return from injury before the end of the season either.

So, with players missing, the final six games could be an opportunity for Chris Coleman to blood some youngsters.

There are probably better ways to spend Easter Saturday than going to Plymouth, but that's what the fixture list has thrown up this year, and it's likely to be a tough game as well as a long journey. We have not done well against Plymouth in the short time they've been competing at the same level as us, and while we look safe, they are really battling against relegation, a full six points behind us, having played a game more.

Injuries forced us into fielding an unfamiliar formation at Palace on Tuesday night, but the players did well, and we could see a repeat of that line-up here, perhaps with some changes then being made for the Charlton game on Monday. David Bell was due to undergo surgery, but following the loss of Jordan Henderson, he is back in the matchday squad. Leon Best is still not fully fit, and James McPake might be another player who won't get a run in the team until next season. Plymouth defender Craig Cathcart was injured in their last outing, and is likely to miss out. Former City right-back David McNamee is, unsurprisingly, a long-term injury absentee for Argyle!

Plymouth need it more than us, and while our defence is OK-ish, nobody looks like scoring prolifically for us right now, so we'll probably lose narrowly here.

COCA-COLA CHAMPIONSHIP: 10th April 2009

Oh what a surprise, 14th place!

We've been in 14th place pretty much all season, and it would be no surprise if we finished there in six games time. That would be an improvement on last season, though probably not enough of an improvement, given the players we've signed since then.

Long-term leaders Wolves could be about to bottle it, with Birmingham only two points behind them, and Sheffield United now up to third and very much in contention too, while at the bottom Charlton could be relegated when they play us on Easter Monday.

The Palace hoodoo pretty much continues, as we're pegged back in a game we really should have won, and concede a goal to an unknown player on his debut, not for the first time.

But it's nice to see Gunnarsson on the scoresheet, even if he probably should have had a hat-trick, and it's nice to be able to relax and enjoy the end of the season, knowing that we really don't have anything to play for in the next few games.

Over Easter, we face two of the Championships relegation-threatened sides - Plymouth away on Saturday, and Charlton at home on Monday, and it would be nice if we could remain unbeaten against these sides, though they have a lot more at stake than us.

Things it would be nice to see in the next few games:

  • Morrison finding his form in front of goal again.
  • Eastwood actually scoring a goal, for fucks sake. Likewise Simpson. And probably Turner too. And Beuzelin.
  • Our defence keeping a clean sheet in an away game.
  • Getting awarded a long-overdue penalty.

Could be wishful thinking though, eh?

The Beancounter keeps track of how many points we've taken from league fixtures, and how well we did in the same games last season, to give a guideline of where we might finish in the table. Clubs promoted from League One, and relegated from the Premiership are substituted for last season's relegated sides in the order they finished, so last season's results against West Brom are comparable to this season's results against Reading, for Colchester, substitute Doncaster and so on.

Last season's Beancounter projections were always within six points of our actual final tally.

We play every weekend and every midweek until the final week of the season, and this clash - postponed from St. Valentine's Day due to our FA Cup committments - is one of the games we have in hand on most of the other sides in The Championship. Both us and Palace are in mid-table, and a win would make it almost mathematically impossible for us to go down, while a defeat would make it almost mathematically impossible for us to go up. Realistically, this has middling end-of-season affair written all over it, though for Chris Coleman it is a return to a club where he once played, as indeed it is for Clinton Morrison.

Changes are likely to be made following Saturday's goalless draw with Reading, with Micky Doyle, Elliott Ward and David Bell in contention for a recall, though we are set to be without Jordan Henderson, Leon Best, Leon McKenzie, James McPake as our injury list lengthens. Stephen Wright is a doubt, so Curtis Wynter may get a rare game at right-back. Palace have injury problems themselves, with Clint Hill, Sean Scannell, Shaun Derry and Paddy McCarthy all likely to miss the game.

We used to do well at Selhurst Park, but Palace are a bit of a bogey team for us these days, and with little to play for, we could trip up here and allow them to do the double over us.

A draw is a fair result from a pretty poor game, and for Reading, time is running out as far as automatic promotion is concerned, while we can go into our final seven games feeling pretty confident of safety, after defeats for several teams near the bottom of the table who have played more games than us.

Unless something disastrous happens in the run-in, we should easily surpass last season's tally of 53 points, which will be a measure of the improvement under Chris Coleman, though maybe not as big an improvement as we might have hoped for, given the undoubted talent of several of our players.

On Tuesday night we travel to Crystal Palace - a team who have been something of a béte noire for us in recent seasons. A win there, and we can really start to relax and enjoy the remainder of the season.

SKY BLUES FINISH FIRST IN CHAMPIONSHIP...

...the Championship's 'Best Matchday Programme' Award, that is. (Mathematically we can't now catch leaders Wolves in the league, and could only finish second!)

Our £3 Programme is, admittedly a decent read, and presumably wins the award because it's not full of the outdated and recycled rubbish that some of the other sides in the division publish, where you can read that Kevin Thornton is a striker who features regularly in our first team...

Championship Preview

Coventry City badgeCoventry City

Reading badgeReading

The two weeks since we last played seems to have lasted an age, and after an intensive programme of fixtures, the break will have been much appreciated by most of the players ahead of an equally intensive run-in between now and May. Beating Doncaster put us onto the psychologically reassuring 50 point tally, and a win here will take us to 53 - our total for last season, and enough for survival in any previous season. Standing between us and that comfort are Reading, however, a team who have already beaten us this season, and in third place harbouring very realistic hopes of an instant return to the Premiership.

Aron Gunarsson might be rested, following his international duties, but player-of-the-season contender Danny Fox could possibly feature on the bench after his injury lay-off. The game has come too soon for James McPake and Leon McKenzie who remain sidelined, while David Bell is also struggling. Jay Tabb hasn't had many chances since leaving us for Reading, but they have a bit of a midfield injury crisis which may see him make his first start. Usually it would be good news for us that Glen Little, Brynjar Gunnarsson, and Jimmy Kebe are all doubts, but in this case it might not be.

Reading looked invincible at home early in the season - but away from home, and in the latter stages of the campaign they've done less well. But they still seem to have more to play for than us, and will probably win. Tabb to score his first for thc club, of course.

CITY FANS PLANNING ACTION OVER TEVEZ

London-based Sky Blues fans are being advised to launch compensation claims against West Ham Utd, over the Carlos Tevez affair.

Following legal action against the Hammers by Sheffield United and their former manager Neil Warnock, supporters in London have been told they have a 'very good case' for compensation due to the increased travel costs of attending a game at Brammall Lane after the relegation of United, compared to a trip to Upton Park

Any supporters who attended Sheffield United vs Coventry last season can claim the difference in cost compared to attending a game against West Ham, and can expect to receive payments of up to £41 per person.
