City push towards the play-offs before the wheels fall off horribly in a month full of controversy on the pitch.

Once again, City underperform at home, having to settle for just a point against a side struggling against relegation, and the season is starting to turn into something of a damp squibette, just as happened a year ago.

We almost lost this game, and Richard Wood's inevitable strike against his former club is a treat, but there's a real 'end of term' feel about us now, and with an Easter weekend of games against much-improved Derby and in-form Reading, the rut could well continue.

The Beancounter keeps track of how many points we've taken from league fixtures, and how well we did in the same games last season, to give a guideline of where we might finish in the table. Clubs promoted from League One, and relegated from the Premiership are substituted for last season's relegated sides in the order they finished, so this season's results against Burnley are comparable to this season's results against West Brom, for Charlton, substitute Scunthorpe and so on.

Last season's Beancounter projections were (at various stages of the campaign) 52, 51, 46, 49 and 56 points. Our actual final tally was 54.

We're starting to look tired following a March choc-full of games, and the drop in form has seen us slip back into mid-table from the brink of the play-offs. But while we probably don't have a lot to play for, Sheffield Wednesday are still very much trying to keep their heads above water at the wrong end of the table, and have a lot riding on this game which they will view as a winnable contest against a team falling out of form at with little to play for now. The Owls ground out a rather controversial win against us earlier in the season, and might be hoping to complete a rather cunty double here at the Ricoh.

Chris Coleman has no fresh injury concerns, though we lack a natural left-winger without Michael McIndoe available. Aron Gunnarsson could be restored to the starting lineup, while Marcus Hall is also pushing for a place. Wednesday are set to be without Jermaine Johnson, but have several players coming back from injury, including Michael Gray and Frank Simek.

It's probably going to be another disappointment. Richard Wood to net against his former club, but we'll have to settle for a meagre point.

  • We are now without a win in four games, although our defeat to Cardiff in our last home league game was our first in ten.

it's a defeat, and it's even more unlikely that we'll make the play-offs now, but a sterling performance against one of the top teams in the division allowed us to leave The Hawthorns with pride intact.

In the two games this season against West Brom - the divisions top scorers - we've conceded only one goal, which is a testimont to the way we've really firmed up our defence this season with players like Wood, McPake and Cranie.

There are seven games remaining now this season, all of them against sides currently outside of the top six. If we took the maximum 21 points, we could well make it, but that's a tall order with a tall side order of tall fries.

West Brom look for all the world as though they will go straight back up to the Premiership, and will do so as Runners-Up. five points clear of third place, and five behind leaders Newcastle, their destiny this season seems assured. That might just make the Hawthorns an easier place to visit for us than it would otherwise be, though we are almost at the point where we can think about Summer Holidays too, given that the play-offs seem tantalisingly out of reach now, and will be even more so after this game, barring an unlikely win like our 4-2 success on our last visit here!

Our second half display against Leicester was one of the battling performances of the season, and goalscorer Gary Deegan will probably keep his place in the side ahead of Aron Gunnarsson, while sub Freddy Eastwood is pushing hard for a return to the starting lineup. Michael McIndoe is likely to miss the game through injury, while long-term absentees Turner, Clarke and Osbourne are all unlikly to play again this season. Leon Barnett isn't suspended, but is probably ineligible to play against his parent club. Elliott Ward's loan at Doncaster has ended, but he has now gone straight to Preston North End. The Baggies are set to be without Jonas Olsson, Marek Cech and Steven Reid.

They are a better side than us and that will probably tell, but we'll put up a decent fight.

it's dramatic and exciting coming from two goals down to draw, and the kind of result that we'd normally take, given that we've lost on every previous visit to the Crisp Bowl, but the fact is that a point, coupled with Cardiff's win over Watford today, just isn't enough to sustain a play-off push.

We're now a full seven points short of sixth-place, having played a game more and with an inferior goal-difference. Let's face it, the 'march to the arch' is just about over.

We needed to beat Plymouth really, and We definitely needed to beat Cardiff. If those results had gone our way, we would be in the top six right now, albeit very precariously.

So let's enjoy the end of the season and try to get some surprise results in the run-in, starting with West Brom on Wednesday, even if thoughts of promotion can probably be put to bed for another year.

GOALLINE TECHNOLOGY: WHY NOT?

Let's face it; Today's game was an all-too-rare example of two wrongs making a right.

When Leicester took a 2-0 lead, the ball almost certainly didn't cross the line, yet the linesman awarded a goal.

And when Gary Deegan tapped in our equaliser. there must surely have been somebody offside during the move, but the flag never went up. So those things evened themselves out.

But very often they don't, and why should football, in the 21st century, still be relying on the discretion of officials to turn a blind eye to a second controversial incident just because there was a first controversial incident?

Surely we can use technology to our advantage as other sports do?

FIFA routinely oppose goalline cameras/sensors and video referees. Why?

We're not ranting today because we're hard done by on this occasion (unlike Cardiff's penalty in midweek). But that doesn't change that the game should be made fairer and less depended on a second wrong to make things right.

The wheels have slipped off our Play-Off bid in a big way, and as far as Last Chance Saloons go, the one we're drinking in looks pretty hostile: trips to the Walkers Stadium and The Hawthorns. Ugh. Horrible.

We played well against Cardiff but got robbed in controversial circumstances, and it has to be said that we did have a couple of lucky wins in the games leading up to it. Whether we can get anything from our trip to Leicester, however, is unlikely to have anything to do with how well we play. We've always lost there ever since they left Filbert Shed. It's a big ask to try and change the tide of fate.

Chris Coleman will be without Michael McIndoe who was injured in midweek, but the influential Sammy Clingan who missed that game should return. Leicester have been playing veteran midfielder Nolberto Solano as a makeshift defender, but are hopeful that Michael Brown will return to face us.

We'll lose, just as we always do at Leicester. Carl Baker to score his first goal for us, and that'll be the only consolation.

If the wheels started to come off against Plymouth, they trundled down the dirt road with sickening inevitability tonight, after much of our recent good work was undone by a deeply controversial result.

A must-win game, a six-point, a crunch clash. And we probably deserved to win, but the demons of old are still with us and Cardiff are the beneficiaries in a big way.

If we could just write off this week and storm to a series of wins during the run-in we could still make the play-offs, but everybody knows that it won't happen like that.

Now that we've lost here, we'll be beaten by Leicester in front of the TV cameras on Sunday, and then a thrashing at West Brom will leave us a lot more than just five points short, and we'll stutter towards a lower-mid-table finish by the end of the season.

Thanks a lot, ref. You don't know how much damage you've done. Cunt.

So, this is it. Biggest game of the season. We could be in the top six if we win, and we could be five points behind sixth-place having played a game more if we lose, while a draw would suit Cardiff way more than it would us. Their away form has been poor lately which is the primary reason we've been able to sneak up on the play-off zone, but our draw against Plymouth suggests that the pressure might be getting to us now. It would be almost unbelievable if we pulled this one off. Almost.

Dave Jones has been at Cardiff a long time, and has built a side that usually looks like it will challenge for promotion- though the most expensive component, striker Michael Chopra, is suspended which gives us a change. Kevin McNaughton is also likely to miss out for the Bluebirds. Leon Barnett is available for us following his latest ban, while Richard Wood and David Bell are in contention after injuries.

Here is where the wheels come off in a big way. Jay Bothroyd to ruin our evening with a late goal as Cardiff do the double over us yet again.

The banana skin had to slip into our path sooner or later, and it happens here - though with Cardiff losing to Leicester today, we're now just two points off sixth place, so we've actually moved up slightly.

Nonetheless it's disappointing because we've drawn at home to a side second from bottom, and could really be out of the play-offs on goal-difference alone.

Tuesday night's home game against Cardiff is one of the most important matches we've played since we've been competing at this level - winning it will probably put us into 6th place. But the feeling today is that the wheels might just have started to come off.

McIndoe's first goal for the club is long overdue and a real positive to take from the game, and hopefully he'll be able to bang in a few more and win over a few more supporters before the season is through.

It seems unlikely that the Ricoh would be anticipating one of the biggest crowds of the season, but such has been the momentum gathered with our recent form that this is the case! The latest banana skin on our play-off trail sees us taking on side who are in danger of coming irretrievably adrift in the bottom three - just like our last opponents Peterborough - but one who have been holding on at this level for a few seasons now, thanks largely to a good record against us. We won at Home Park in December and will be looking for a rare double over the Pilgrims - something we last managed back in the 1960s. Can we push on and keep the good run going? It's a tall order but we've been playing well of late and our opponents are almost at the stage where they can give up.

Leon Barnett is, as seems usual these days, suspended, and our defence will have to pick itself because Ben Turner has aggravated an ankle injury on his return to fitness and will now probably be out for the remainder of this season. Richard Wood can return though, and Marcus Hall showed against Peterborough that he is more than ready to come back into the side and do a job. Plymouth are set to be without Reda Johnson and Chris Clark, while winger Craig Noone faces a late test.

Yes, we beat Palace and Posh and Scunny - all teams down there near the bottom, but we've been grinding out these wins by the odd goal, and it seems difficult to keep that going. We've got tough fixtures after this one, so three points is a must here, but it just feels like we might end up disappointed. Wood to score in a frustrating draw.

COCA-COLA CHAMPIONSHIP: 12 March 2010

Midweek results have been kind to us, with Cardiff City losing most importantly of all, and our league position is now one of 'serious contender' especially as we have to play Cardiff soon. Exciting times to be us, as we've not been in this sort of position at this stage in the season for many years.

It looks like Newcastle - still maintaining the only unbeaten home record - will run away with the title, with either West Brom or Forest going up with them, and Swansea and Leicester the surprise play-off sides, but 6th spot is very much up for grabs, and we're one of several sides with an eye on it.

At the start of the season, we'd have taken a position ahead of clubs like Sheffield Utd, QPR and Boro - it's just the bizarre continuing success of the Leicesters and Swanseas of this world that is keeping us from a really lofty position!

Banana skins? Pfft, we're stepping over them carefully every week these days, and the 'March to the Arch' is becoming ever more of a reality for the Sky Blues.

The defence, whoever plays in it, is keeping clean sheets now and we're scoring the odd goal here and there, with Jon Stead looking like a useful acquisition indeed.

All we can do is win our own games, and it's true that Cardiff's win today keeps us three points off the play-offs with no hope of making up the goal-difference. But we're keeping in touch with only a quarter of the season remaining, and at the very least we'll have no relegation worries this season.

We don't play in midweek, but lots of teams do, and if those results go our way, we could inch closer to the play-offs without even kicking a ball, and our game next weekend is against second-bottom Plymouth - another banana skin, but another chance to get three points on the board before a crunch contest with Cardiff.

INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP

It's been a relatively quiet week for our International stars, with Sammy Clingan missing Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat in Albania due to illness, and Keiren Westwood being an unused sub for the Republic as they lost 2-0 to Brazil.

But Aron Gunnarsson was back in action for Iceland, as they drew 0-0 in Cyprus.

Championship Preview

Peterborough Utd badgePeterborough Utd

Coventry City badgeCoventry City

It's becoming quite exciting now as the season approaches it's business end, and for all the rightest of right reasons. We're three points behind the club in 6th place and with a serious chance of making the play-offs. Yes, Cardiff have two games in hands on us and a hugely better goal difference so 'three points behind' is fairly meaningless, but our proximity to the top six shows just how far we've come in recent weeks. Peterborough, on the other hand, are staring instant relegation squarely in the face. They have really struggled since winning promotion from League One and are ten points short of safety. On paper we should win comfortably, but as we know, games aren't played on paper'n'shit.

We managed to beat Scunthorpe despite injuries to Richard Wood and David Bell who have been two of Chris Coleman's most important signings. They will both miss out once again, and Sammy Clingan is struggling with a virus and missed the International friendlies in midweek. Leon Barnett is, once again, suspended having got himself sent off again last week. This means that Ben Turner will probably make a long-awaited return to the side in central defence, while the exciting Gary Baker will continue on the wing. Posh are without Josh Simpson and Ryan Bennett while Reuben Reid and Exodus Geohaghon are doubts.

We've done really well in recent weeks, only losing to the top side in the division, but it has to stop some time, and we'll probably get beaten by the bottom side here.
